About Us
The Devon Academy is a college of excellence in the field of professional massage therapy. We pride ourselves in being able to offer small classes with no more than 12 students, in order to provide individual personal attention and a massage course which can be adapted to the students individual needs.
Located in historic Paiges Lane in the heart of Barnstaple town centre, at the back of Marks and Spencer, close to the main car park, Devon Academy is a listed building which offers a superb atmosphere for learning.
We are one of the most successful registerred ITEC Colleges with an established 100% pass rate in most of our examinations to date (sadly one student failed A & P in 2007). We attribute our success to both our energy and enthusiasm and the dedication and focus of our students, which proves to be a winning combination
We are also probably the only college specialising in "Fast Track" intensive massage courses for beginners and Post Graduate practitioners wishing to polish and develop their skills. Our students are men and women of all ages and come from all over Britain, Europe and even as far a field as South Africa and America. Academy students will be able to experience "hands on" supervised training with real clients as well as working on each other. We also have a resident counsellor for students to discuss any issues or problems of concern
Principal: Gail Lowe
- Qualified nurse, practisiing massage therapist, counsellor and teacher
- Over Twenty years clinical and teaching experience
Gail Lowe has been practising since 1986. Since then her experience and expertise have earned her an excellent reputation as a massage therapist with local GP's and hospital staff. Gail has eighteen years experience teaching and lecturing within the NHS. Most of her time is occupied teaching ITEC Holistic Massage, Anatomy & Physiology, Aromatherapy, Indian Head Massage, Stone Therapy, Business Awareness, Professional Conduct and Post Graduate Courses. Last year she also taught the Complementary Therapy syllabus for the AS Social Care Course for Tewkesbury College. She is also a consultant for book publishers for whom she reviews therapeutic text books prior to publishing. She brings a wealth of knowledge and "hands on" experience to her teaching.
Vice Principal: Derek Lowe
- Qualified, practising massage therapist and teacher
- Over 25 years business experience
- Thirteen years teaching experience
Derek Lowe holds a BA degree in Business Studies and is fully qualified in Holistic Massage, Indian Head Massage and reflexology. He has 25 years business experience and has a wealth of knowledge to impart to students on the ITEC Business Awareness and Professional Conduct course as well as Anatomy and Physiology Course. Derek will be sharing his vast experience, skills and quirky sense of humour when teaching the ITEC Anatomy and Physiology, Business Awareness and Reflexology Courses.
Together they work well as a team and have completely different techniques for teaching which will appeal to all types students.
