Holistic body massage is one of the oldest healing arts, treating the mind, body and spirit. An ancient art which developed from Chinese dynasties, through the Swedish massage movement to England. Holistic massage was once the main practice of the first physio therapists in this country and currently, when placed in the hands of a well qualified therapist with a thorough understanding of Anatomy and Physiology, continues to treat many physical and emotional conditions.
An ITEC Diploma may lead to a career working within the health, sports and leisure industry at clubs, cruise ships and spas, doctor's surgeries or even hospitals at home or abroad. ITEC is recognised worldwide in most countries and even those like Canada and America which have their own standards, ITEC students need only upgrade their qulaifications to practice in these countries.

Courses are designed for students who are looking for and can cope with, a part time accelerated and intensive course that will give them an internationally recognized diploma in just a few months.
Pre-requisite: None - but an educational background of 5 CSE qualifications or the equivelent is recommended
It is an ITEC requirement that students either study or have taken already a recognized Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology diploma; therefore all students without this qualification must take all parts of the course and prepare to devote at least 5 hours per week to home learning.
If you already hold an ITEC A & P certificate or an acceptable equivalent, (please confirm this with ITEC direct prior to enrolment) then you need not complete the last three assignments outlined below or sit an Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology theory examination. Certificates must be sent in on enrolment of the course to enable us to apply for Approved Prior Learning confirmation from ITEC.
The course is divided into five core parts:
- Holistic Massage which includes 30 case studies and treatments; practical examination including oral questions
- Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology (50 Multiple choice examination paper) including Less Common Pathlogy assignment
- Business Plan Assignment
- Health, Safety and Hygiene Assignment
- Complementary Therapies Assignment

Massage Practical
- Full body massage technique (inc head, face and neck) Performance and understanding of massage movements. Adaptation of technique to suit client individual needs. Supervised student practice on each other and members of the public. Individual tuition for maximum of 6 students at any one time. Demonstration and practise of correct hygiene procedures. Recognition and adaptation of contraindications. Knowledge and understanding of main muscles you are working over
- Please be aware that students learn by not only giving, but also receiving massage and are expected to participate in both aspects of the course. If this is a problem then please discuss this with the tutors prior to enrolment onto the course.
30 Case Studies and treatments
- 6 Case studies - 6 clients, three treatments each with written assessments =18
- 12 individual short treatments ( can be done in house during the course)
Practical Examination - 45 minute treatment including oral questions
Massage Theory:
- Holistic approach; Integral biology. History; Psychological, physiological effects of massage. Consultation, medical history, lifestyle, after care. Professional ethics, hygiene procedures. Client care; First Aid emergencies in the clinic
3 Assignments (to include a minimum of 60 words; graph; chart or picture)
- Business Plan which will prepare you for running your own practice
- Health, Hygiene and safety Assignment
- Complmentary Therapies Assignment
Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology - Syllabus includes:
- Skeletal System
- Muscular System
- Skin or Integumental System

- Nervous System
- Respiratory System
- Digestive System
- Urinary System
- Reproductive System
Aim of the course: It is vital that students have a thorough understanding of the all body systems and disorders in order to study complementary therapies.
Theory Examination - One hour - 50 Multiple choice questions
Assignment - Less Coomon Pathology Assignment
Student course files must be presented to the examiner for review!
Examinations
Examinations are usually held on the Sunday and Monday at the end of the last module.

Please bring with you:
- 2 large bath sheets (preferably green)
- White or black tunic uniform or dress for practical sessions (click LINK for suppiers)
Please note: Students without uniforms will not be permitted to join practical sessions! - Antiseptic Wipes (tea tree or lavender wipes are acceptable)
- Antibacterial chemical hand wash (not soap)
- 2 Folders: One for case studies with dividers and plastic wallets;one for course work to be presented to the examiner
- Course Books (see list above) Can be purchased on enrolment and sent by post with confirmation
- You will need to have use of a couch for your case studies
