ITEC QCA Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage (Int)
Pre-requisite: Body Massage including Anatomy, Physiology & Pathology.
ITEC International Level 3 Sports massage is an excellent internationally recognized qualification for massage therapists who wish to work within and alongside the sports industry. This challenging course is for existing therapists or personal trainers who wish not only to provide treatments for sports injuries and improve sporting performance but to successfully treat numerous "every day musculoskeletal injuries. This is an excellent course which gives you all the practical skills and knowledge necessary to qualify and gain insurance to practice as a Sports Massage therapist.
Tutors: Gail Lowe is a qualified nurse and remedial therapist with over twenty five years clinical experience. She trained and studied at the Northern Institute of Massage and has worked with the medical profession, osteopaths and chiropractors and has maintained "many Olympic athletes" at peak performance during her varied career.
Derek Lowe is a qualified sports massage therapist and works closely with a physiotherapists and local sports clubs and Rugby teams. He specializes in Soft tissue release, NMT and Muscle Energy Techniques.
All students will benefit from their vast experience in a relaxed, fun, but professional atmosphere.
Practical Includes:
- Neuromuscular Techniques - NMT
- Soft Tissue Release - STR
- Trigger Points
- Muscle Energy Technique - MET
- Connective Tissue Release - CTM
- Pre-event: Post event Treatments
- Proprioreceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation - PNF
Theory Includes:
- Muscle actions, insertions and origins
- Common Sports injuries
- Treatment of injuries
- Diagnosis and physical assessment
- Aerobic System, anaerobic glycolysis
- Effects and benefits of Sports on muscles
- Anatomy and Physiology of Musculoskeletal Joints
Examinations Consists of:
- Theory examination: One hour, 50 multiple choice questions
- Practical examination: One hour
- Case studies - 5 people x 3 treatments = 15 in all (although it is recommended that you do at least 2 practice treatments on each area of the body to be prepared for the examination

ITEC QCF Level 4 Diploma in Sports Massage (UK-
This course is recommended for therapists who already hold a recognised Level 3 sports or body massage qualification and who would like to work within the sports industry at sports events, with olympic athletes and sports clubs.
Description
The main aim of the ITEC Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy is to enable learners to gain the practical and theoretical skills necessary to provide Sports Massage Therapy. It has been designed for practitioners currently working in Sport and Active Leisure, including Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Sports Therapists and Massage Therapists. The purpose of this specialist qualification is to enrich practitioners’ understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to the application of Sports Massage. It will provide learners with advanced palpation skills and those needed to analyse posture and range of movement. It will also provide practitioners with a range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in Sport and Active Leisure. Practitioners will learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future treatments.
It also aims:
- to provide skills at Level 4 in the Qualifications and Credit Framework for those interested in the Sport and active leisure industry
- to provide opportunities for staff in the Sport and active leisure industry to gain a Level 4 qualification
- to provide a stepping stone for learners leading into a Level 5 qualification in the Sport and active leisure Industry
- to sustain the interest of learners wanting to work in the Sport and active leisure industry
- to encourage knowledge and understanding of the Sport and active leisure industry at Level 4
- to provide opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the major Functional Skills and the wider Functional Skills in a Sports Massage context such as communicating with clients, working with others and problem solving
- to provide opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in employment as a Sports Massage Therapist
Assessment
This qualification will be internally and externally assessed using the assessment of skills as set out below. Once all of the treatment evidence documentation, assignments and underpinning knowledge have been completed the learner will have a final practical examination carried out by the ITEC Examiner.
Examination
Theory
- Multiple choice paper - ! hour
- Written theory paper - 2 hours
- Written theory assignment
Practical
- 50 hours of treatment evidence both in class and in own time
- 50 hours of sporting event work
- Postural analysis (5 people)
- Practical examination 1 hour
Learners will study the theory and concept of Sports Massage Therapy as well as anatomy and physiology of the body and how to plan and prepare for Sports Massage Therapy.
Opportunities for Employment
This certificate enables graduates to conduct Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy in Sports and Active Leisure Industry - Gym, Health Clubs, Sporting facilities or Spas.
